Elections to the Academic Senate of the CTU are held separately by chambers of academic staff and students, and further separately by electoral districts of individual faculties and in the electoral district of non-faculty constituent parts in accordance with the Electoral Code of the Academic Senate of the CTU. Academic staff are elected three from each electoral district for a three-year term. There are two representatives from each student electoral district in the AS CTU, with one student elected each year for a two-year term. Thus, half of the senators in the student chamber change every year, similar to the way the Senate of the Parliament of the Czech Republic changes by thirds every two years.
Why to run?
The powers of the Academic Senate are set out in detail in the Higher Education Act. Among the most important ones are the election of the Rector, the approval of the budget and internal regulations (e.g. the Study and Examination Rules) or the approval of strategic documents. Beyond these and other clearly defined powers by law, senators can discuss essentially any topic and adopt resolutions on it, thereby influencing the running of the university.
